Kavanaugh outrage exposes media bias, yet again

Analytics 01:28 28.09.2018
If Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation fight is any indication, the left-leaning mainstream media is as biased as ever. When #Resistance is the be-all and end-all, “guilty until proven innocent” is fair game — as long as it will undermine the Trump agenda.

The headlines — dozens of which smear Kavanaugh’s name on a daily basis — speak for themselves. Consider the recent New York Times header: “Kavanaugh’s Yearbook Page Is ‘Horrible, Hurtful’ to a Woman It Named.” Another Times “story” transitioned from fact-based journalism to outright opinionating: “Even as Judge Kavanaugh emphatically denied the accusations against him, his appearance [on Fox News] had more than a whiff of a reality-show confessional, starkly at odds with the prestige of the job he is seeking.”

That, from a “news report.” Can you imagine such blatantly biased coverage of an Obama nominee?

Vox’s Zack Beauchamp, supposedly a “senior reporter” himself, went even further: “Confirming Kavanaugh could lead to a collapse in faith for the Court — with dire consequences for American democracy.” Time, meanwhile, played the race card, “If Republicans back down and pull Kavanaugh’s nomination or don’t vote to confirm him, something most of them are loathe to do, they risk alienating the core of their base: White men.”

Of course, the liberal media’s silence when a Democrat is implicated is deafening. Rep. Keith Ellison’s (D-Minn.) ex-girlfriend, Karen Monahan, accused Ellison of physical and verbal abuse. The Minnesota congressman allegedly sent Monahan threatening text messages and screamed obscenities at her, as he dragged Monahan off a bed by her feet.

Were Democrats outraged? Apparently not. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) — one of the most vocal Kavanaugh critics in the Senate — refused to respond to Monahan’s allegations. The same goes for Ellison himself, and hundreds of other congressional Democrats. In Monahan’s words: “I’ve been smeared, threatened, isolated from my own party.”

Was the liberal media outraged? You guessed it: Of course not. Aside from a CNN story, mainstream news outlets don’t seem to be giving the Ellison scandal the same blanket coverage as Kavanaugh, despite — or because of — his status as one of America’s most powerful Democrats.

When the liberal media are faced with inconvenient truths, it’s far more convenient to peddle half-baked talking points and partisan speculation. Remember, this is the same liberal media that routinely promotes the attorney Michael Avenatti and his daily anti-Trump tirades — the latest being an unverified, uncorroborated “gang rape” allegation hurled at Judge Kavanaugh. Left-leaning news outlets also flood the airwaves with unyielding coverage of special counsel Robert Mueller’s witch hunt, which somehow leaped from unfounded collusion allegations to interactions with adult film stars.

Lost in the shuffle along with Ellison’s transgressions was Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), whose federal corruption trial was perhaps the most underreported in U.S. history. And don’t forget the liberal media’s general unwillingness to cover Al Franken’s sexual improprieties and, of course, Bill Clinton’s many decades of sexual deviance.

Yesterday, the witch hunt targeted Judge Clarence Thomas. Today, it’s Judge Kavanaugh. Tomorrow, it will be another Republican nominee.

The only constant is media bias. If the liberal media wants to be taken seriously for something other than manufactured outrage, consistency would go a long way — especially when it’s inconvenient.
