The U.S. Army said Thursday that a Fort Bliss soldier’s account of saving a man’s life with a ballpoint pen and a Saints hoodie was inaccurate.
Fort Bliss retracted the news release after Fort Bliss and Texas Department of Public Safety officials investigated and found no evidence to back up the soldier's story, according to the El Paso Times.
The Army release claimed Sgt. Trey Troney had pulled over to the site of a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 near Sweetwater, Texas, and came to the aid of a man who had a collapsed lung and a bleeding head injury.
"The entire 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss team sincerely apologize to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Highway Patrol, the city of Sweetwater, Texas, the city of El Paso, the University of Texas at El Paso, the New Orleans Saints, the local and national media and the American people," Fort Bliss said in a statement that was released to several media outlets.
