Today the issue of what to do about the world's 65.3 million displaced people takes center stage at the United Nations General Assembly, leaders from around the globe converge on New York for the first-ever summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants. More than a dozen world-renowned media outlets called it a historic summit. For the first time, the level of heads of state and government are expected to approve a document aimed at unifying the U.N.'s 193 member states behind a more coordinated approach that protects the human rights of refugees and migrants.
Eurasia Diary conducted an interview with Furio De Angelis, the representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Azerbaijan. He talked about the importance of the summit and expectations from the meeting.
According to Furio De Angelis, "The summit of today 19th of September, the General Assembly of United Nation in New-York is very important milestone and it is very important moment to really reflect on what is human displacement, forcible displacement of people by war and conflict, persecution and violence of human rights. It is a big gathering, it is an occasion to come all together and really to find political will to tackle the problem, to address the root causes and the needs of the people who are displaced forcibly and find a resolution to their displacement."
Eurasia Diary will publish the full version of the interview with the representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 21 September World Peace Day.
