Ingeborg Breiners, Former director in UNESCO talked exclusively to Eurasia Diary.
Eurasia Diary: I would like to ask you some couple of questions. You have served almost 6 years in IPB and I would like to ask you that what is your expectation from this organization as a person who spent many years for this organization ?
Ingeborg Breiners: It has been a great pleasure for me to work with IPB not only for 6 years but almost 10 years .2 years i served as vice president and 7 years as co president . Mandate of IPB is a wonderful mandate for me because we want to see the world without war. If I am to related to the congress that we have today I am slightly optimistic because we have managed this event to get so many partners together at this congress. We have UN officials at the top levels, parliamentarians, trade unions and women organizations, and interms of religion there are church and other religions. So along the Peace Movement having so little money is not able really to make changes that we would like. But this event makes me optimistic because there are many partners now and if you have listened to carefully what people speak I think most people are afraid of war. They are afraid of all these weapons that are flouting around and we can not afford it . We need to spend our resources on meeting the needs of people it is easier that and the challenges is of course to have politicians and decision makers understand and change their minds .That is what we need all these partners for. That is why i am optimistic right now .
Eurasia Diary: UN seems powerless on the situation of strugleing against the chemical weapons and others ,how do you think that what is the problem?
Ingeborg Breiners: The problem is that Member States do not want and UN is as strong as their member states allow them to be. So member states have to change their minds and it was good today that we had a least one country here that is speaking out now for war and nuclear disarmament and both of a reduction in military spending . Kazakhstan did it. Kazakhstan is ready to continue brilliant work on the country . So equally we have to look at how much or how little money UN has.Because one year military spending is the same amount of 615 years of the UN general budget .How can UN do its work if it doesn’t get means to do?
Eurasia Diary:My last question is that what is your massage to our readers through Eurasia Diary analytical information gateway?
Ingeborg Breiners: My massage is not to stay inside thinking and getting angry but showing that you want a world in peace and a world without war we need these voices to be heard in order to be able to make a difference.
