HBO host Bill Maher on Friday mocked first lady Melania Trump over the controversial jacket she wore to visit immigrant children detained at the border.
Trump sparked a wave of backlash after she was photographed boarding a plane to Texas in the green Zara jacket, which was printed with the message, “I really don’t care. Do u?”
On Friday’s “Real Time,” Maher joked that the jacket was one of the least controversial out of her collection.
“In her defense, she has a lot of racist sweaters that were in the wash that she could have worn,” the frequent Trump critic said. “She picked out one of the best.”
He presented a series of edited photos that showed provocative messages on the back of the first lady’s various coats.
“I’m sorry, you must have me confused with the Slovenian catalogue model who gives a shit,” read one.
Another was emblazoned with the phrase, “Think ur living in a cage? Try being me,” a reference to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers where migrant children are being held after being separated from their parents.
“That’s Mrs. Hitler to you,” read another.
And Maher said his personal favorite was a white coat printed with the phrase: “I voted for Hillary.”
The first lady’s spokeswoman defended the jacket, saying that there was no “hidden message” and criticizing the media for the “focus on her wardrobe” rather than her visit with children.
But President Trump suggested in a tweet that his wife’s fashion choice was really a message to the “Fake News Media.”
“Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!” he wrote in a tweet.
Since the photos of the jacket emerged, several brands and activist groups have trolled the first lady by creating “I really do care” clothing items and donating the proceeds of sales to immigration groups.
