Following his visit to Moscow and meetings with Russian legislative and executive officials, US Republican senator Rand Paul expects to gain bipartisan support in the Congress to continue dialogue with Russia, including on nuclear disarmament, the lawmaker said in a video address released on Friday.
"I hope thoughtful minds will prevail in our current stand-off with Russia in order to embrace the dialogue necessary to further reduce the potential for the terrible, world-altering catastrophe that a war between nuclear powers could bring," he noted.
"My goal in visiting both government and opposition leaders in Russia was to promote dialogue. My hope on my return to Congress is to find bipartisan support to improve dialogue and continue progress on reducing nuclear arms," Paul said.
At the beginning of the last week the senator held negotiations in Moscow with members of the Federation Council, the State Duma and the Foreign Ministry, and on Thursday he met in St. Petersburg with its Governor Georgy Poltavchenko.
Paul is known for his position against the policy of pressure conducted by the United States’ administration. He repeatedly stated that he is a supporter of diplomacy and backs US President Donald Trump on cooperation with government officials across the globe.
