'Don’t worry, we will return to Donbas!' - Belarus president

A newcomer from Donbas addressed Alyaksandr Lukashenka during Tuesday’s opening of a new bridge over Pripyat River.

The woman, who has been living in Belarus for four years, thanked him for his effort to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine. According to her, she had to leave her native town as the war burst out.

“It is Belarus that gave us a chance for a new life -in the truest sense of the word,” the woman, who is now a resident of Homiel, said.

“Well, we will return to Donbas if someone wants to. Do not worry, everything will be fine,” Lukashenka promised.

The Belarusian leader has repeatedly expressed his readiness to get involved in the conflict.

On October 31, when making a speech at the Munich Security Conference Core Group meeting in Minsk, Lukashenka stressed that a mutually acceptable solution on bringing peacekeepers into Donbas should be found as soon as possible. Belarus is ready to take responsibility for ensuring peace in eastern regions of Ukraine and exerting control over the Russian-Ukrainian border, as well as assist holding elections in Donbas, he stated.

In February, Lukashenka said Belarusian peacekeepers could stand between the conflicting parties in Ukraine if there was an agreement between Poroshenko and Putin. According to him, if Belarus were entrusted with a role in the conflict settlement in Ukraine, it would do everything necessary without taking anyone’s side.
