Democrats have rejected a proposal from Donald Trump that would fund his border wall and end the partial government shutdown.
On Saturday, Trump revealed a package of reforms that would offer a series of concessions on issues championed by Democrats, including a temporary extension of protections for groups of immigrants to the US.
However, the plan was rejected outright by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi before Trump had a chance to appear on television to announce it, CNN reports.
On Sunday, Trump took to Twitter to attack Pelosi, saying she had “turned down my offer yesterday before I even got up to speak”, adding that Pelosi was “so petrified of the ‘lefties’ in her party that she has lost control”.
The Washington Post says that the breakdown in negotiations is the “latest sign that both sides remain far apart as the longest government shutdown in history drags on”.
Pressure to reopen the government is mounting, as around 800,000 federal employees are days away from missing their second pay cheque, and some states are reportedly running out of funding to support low income families.
