Against the backdrop of tensions with Israel, Iran consults with its neighbors, conducts negotiations, and tries to normalize relations. Azerbaijan is excluded from this. Why does Tehran not want to raise the tension between Baku and Tehran?
Political scientist Tural Ismayilov told Ednews that in terms of the future of Iran-Azerbaijani relations, it is necessary to pay attention to the statements of Iran's ambassadors in foreign countries, especially Iran's ambassador to Armenia:
"In this regard, the Iranian side should also fulfill its obligations and pay attention to the statements of its embassies and its diplomats not to make any statements against the president. Otherwise, it is regrettable that people related to Iranian media and Iranian diplomacy in general are trying to damage the relations between the two countries. that can be permanent".
The political commentator noted that Iran's relations with Azerbaijan have never been sincere:
"Official Tehran has always sacrificed relations with Azerbaijan to its narrow egoistic ideology. Until now, Baku has not shown an aggressive attitude towards Tehran, nor has it allowed attacks on Iran or similar activities from its territory. The deterioration of Azerbaijan-Iran relations is completely related to the position of the other side. Azerbaijan has done nothing but good neighborly relations and mutual cooperation towards Iran. Iran sees Azerbaijan as a potential threat to itself."
The political scientist emphasized that Iran is one of the countries that are not happy about Azerbaijan's liberation of its lands from occupation.
"Tehran conducted military exercises on the border along the territories freed from occupation, and made threatening rhetorical statements at the level of officials. Iran's position regarding Zangezur has not changed. Iranian officials look at the issue from a very narrow perspective and make baseless statements. In particular, they present the opening of the Zangezur corridor as a change of borders, which is politically illiterate and biased. As for Iran experiencing military tension with Azerbaijan over this issue, this is a weak possibility. I don't think that Baku will take steps to make the processes so tense at the moment. No additional headache is needed for Iran. Experience shows that Tehran talks a lot but does little."
