During the visit to the UNHQ and participation in the panel discussions on Peace and Security within the 72nd session of the UNGA, the delegation from the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF) also participated in the Exhibition and Interactive Pavilion The World of Bees organized by the Republic of Slovenia.

Nejc Perhavec, official representative Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, kindly explained to Eurasia Diary about the importance of the campaign they hold.

The main purpose of this campaign is to raise public awareness and to emphasize the role of apicultural products.

Bees, as pollinators, play an important role for humankind in terms of providing food, food security and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and a healthy environment.

Unfortunately, in recent years bees have been facing increasing threats; raising public awareness of the importance of bees can and must contribute to boosting collective actions to protect them and their habitats.

Therefore, in 2014 the Slovenian Beekeeper's Association launched the proposal that WORLD BEE DAY be celebrated. The World Bee Day initiative was supported by the Republic of Slovenia and backed by Apimondia, the beekeepers' umbrella association.

In the context of the World Bee Day initiative, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Food of the Republic of Slovenia is actively involved in information and promotion activities related to the initiative, also with an interactive exhibition in a form of pavilion called Bee World, and other related projects.

After over three years of efforts a resolution to declare 20 May World Bee Day was unanimously adopted within the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the UN General Assembly in New York on 17 November.

It is supported by all UN Member States, with 115 states being co-signatories or the so-called co-sponsors of the resolution, including the largest states such as the USA, Canada, China, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, India and all EU Member States.

May 20th is the day Anton Jansa was born (1734-1773). He is known as a pioneer of modern beekeeping and one of the greatest experts on bees of the time. He was the first modern beekeeping teacher in the world. Therefore, they chose this day as an honour to his legacy.
