"The South Caucasus region is now of great interest in the scale of global geopolitics. The attention of key players of the Eurasian level is focused on Azerbaijan as the main candidate for geopolitical leadership in the Caucasus region. The current foreign policy activity of Azerbaijan, specifically the visits of Erdogan, Lieberman and Putin to Baku are clear examples".
This was stated by the Russian historian Oleg Kuznetsov, who commented on for Eurasia Diary the visits of the heads of state to Azerbaijan in September.
He named the reasons for interest in cooperation with Azerbaijan.
"Azerbaijan is the most populated, the most economically developed country which possess the most serious armed forces in the region. Due to the specific geographic location, Azerbaijan is able to exert influence over the development of the situation in several regions: Asia and the Middle East, which are in the frames of Turkey's interest, the Black Sea-Caucasus region and the Caucasus-Caspian region. Proceeding from the fact that Azerbaijan is a self-sufficient state with its own policy and unique geographical location at the junction of several geopolitical regions of the Eurasian continent, Azerbaijan is of interest.
