Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Monday said that he felt bad after Julen Lopetegui was discharged of his role at Real Madrid but also mentioned that if managers fail to produce results then they will be terminated from their contract. Speaking at news conference following his team’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham, Guardiola said, “Football I know what it is, we are still here because we win games, if we don’t win we will be sacked.”
After suffering a 5-1 defeat against Barcelona in Camp Nou, the European Champions on Monday sacked recently-appointed manager Lopetegui.
Stating that he felt sorry for the former Spain national team coach, Guardiola further said, “I’m sorry for Julen because he’s a friend of mine. He’s an exceptional person.” He also mentioned that both the managers share a solid relationship stemming from their playing days at Barcelona.
Guardiola managed Barcelona side has overpowered Real Madrid on nine occasions and has lost twice. The two defeats were in La Liga (2012) and Copa del Rey final (2011).
Guardiola also said that he will speak with Lopetegui over the phone in the next few days. Wishing Lopetegui good luck in future, the ex-Barcelona manager said, “It is what it is. It’s football, nobody escapes that. When you have bad results you will not continue in big, big places like Barcelona or Madrid … I wish him all the best.”
