Barcelona plan to ditch Coutinho to secure Neymar transfer a year after Liverpool exit

Barcelona may sell Phillipe Coutinho to sensationally fund a deal for PSG forward Neymar just a year on from his Liverpool exit, according to reports.

Barcelona signed Coutinho from Liverpool back in January last year, with the Brazil international moving to the Nou Camp in a £142million transfer.

The La Liga giants decided to fork out for the Samba superstar as a replacement for Neymar, who jumped ship to PSG back in the summer of 2017.

Barcelona have failed to see the best of the 26-year-old, however, with Philippe Coutinho struggling for form over in Catalonia.

And the London Evening Standard say the La Liga giants are mulling over whether to cut Coutinho loose.

On his day, the former Liverpool star is one of the best players in world football.

But his stock at Barcelona is now at an all-time low, with Coutinho behind the controversial Ousmane Dembele in the pecking order.

Some at the club thought he would be an ideal replacement for Andres Iniesta.

But that does not appear to be the case either, with Coutinho’s performances in the middle of the park leaving much to be desired.

The Evening Standard says Barcelona are ready to cut the Brazilian loose to fund a return for Neymar.

The PSG forward left the club 18 months ago in controversial circumstances.

Many at the Nou Camp were furious with Neymar, particularly given how much they had invested in him.

But, despite that, Neymar to Barcelona could happen at the end of the season.

Coutinho, meanwhile, has been assured of his future at the club by director Guillermo Amor.

"Coutinho's a player with a lot of experience,” he said.

“[He is] one of the best players in Europe and he is ready to play [for] five minutes or 90 minutes.

"He's a player that thinks more about the team than himself and there are no doubts about him being one of the best players in the world.

“He's always played well for Barca, he could play [every game] from the off.

"Barca signed him because he's one of the best in the world and he's going to give us a lot.

“He's got many years left on his contract and a lot to give to Barcelona."
