Mexican journalist Jesus Ramos is second to be killed in 2019

There have been 143 journalists killed in Mexico since 2000, including Saturday's murder of Jesus Ramos. Since 2005, the whereabouts of 21 media officials remain unknown.

Mexican journalist and radio announcer Jesus Ramos was shot dead on Saturday morning, in a restaurant where he was having breakfast in the Emiliano Zapata municipality in Tabasco, local media reported

Ramos, who was a presenter on the 99.FM radio station for over 20 years, was killed by a man who has not yet been identified. The journalist was inside a hotel having breakfast when an armed man shot him eight times. He was transferred to a hospital in a private vehicle and later died from his injuries.

The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Tabasco stated that the investigation into the homicide of Jesus Ramos has begun. After the death of the journalist was confirmed, FGE experts went to the crime scene to acquire evidence from the attack.

Special Prosecutor's Office for Crimes against Freedom of Expression of the Attorney General's Office was also informed of this attack and will be taking part in the investigation.

Adan Augusto Lopez, Governor of Tabasco state, lamented the killing of Ramos and called upon lawmakers to work on law initiatives to protect journalists in the state, and in Mexico in general.

There have been 143 journalists killed in Mexico since 2000, including that of Ramos,  Since 2005, the whereabouts of 21 media workers remain unknown. Ramos is the second journalist killed in 2019.

On January, 21 Rafael Murua Manriquez, a journalist from a communal radio station, was killed in the Baja California Sur state. Manríquez had been part of the country's witness protection program, and had received threats as recently as November, according to Mexican publication Capital.
