'Cristiano and Juventus were awesome' - Messi praises Ronaldo

World A- A A+

Lionel Messi again produced the goods for Barcelona against Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Champions League. The Argentine scored two goals while adding two assists as Barca cruised past Lyon 5-1 in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie to book their place in the quarter-finals. Barcelona have now made it a record 30 games without a defeat at their home stadium, Camp Nou, and Messi has been the star for them during those wins.

His display against Lyon continued the amazing form which has seen him leave everyone behind in the goalscoring charts in Europe. But in the Round of 16, it was another player who took all the plaudits despite Messi scoring two and assisting two. It was Cristiano Ronaldo who made sure that the whole world was talking about him after he scored a sensational hat-trick against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Juventus were trailing 0-2 from the first leg and needed to score three goals to advance to the next stage. Ronaldo proved his worth and stepped up to single-handedly win the match for the Turin-based club.

Messi also lavished praise on his arch-rival for his performance against Atletico. The Barca captain expressed surprise that Atletico were so poor in their display while saying that Cristiano was awesome in the match.

"Cristiano and Juventus were awesome," Messi told Movistar+ following Wednesday's win over Lyon. "It was a big surprise because I thought Atletico would be stronger. But Juventus overcame them and Cristiano had a magical night with three goals."

Messi could now face Ronaldo in the next leg as both Barcelona and Juventus are through to the quarterfinals. However, the Argentine is not concerned as he labelled all the teams in the Champions League as difficult.

"All rivals are difficult, we can't choose," he said. "We have to wait for the draw and see who will be our rival. City, Juventus, Ajax, all are really good. Liverpool have offensive success and they showed at Munich. All of them will be complicated."

Messi scored the first goal for Barcelona on the night with a penalty. Philippe Coutinho also hit his first goal for the club since January to the Catalans' advantage. A 58th-minute strike from Lucas Tousart brought Lyon back into the game but Messi struck again 20 minutes later to put the tie to bed. Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele then scored late in the match to add some shine to their team's scoreline.
