Yerevan is changing its tactics after failing to play the 'Turkish card', presenting Ankara as a direct participant of the conflict around the unrecognized Nagorno Karabakh Republic. Russian media outlets have come to this conclusion after they analyzed the statements of the Armenian side during the current escalatio.
Yerevan's position looks unconvincing, given numerous reports about the import of Kurdish militants to the conflict zone by the Armenian side, Komsomolskaya Pravda notes.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated on October 1 that the NKR is now fighting international terrorism, which poses an equal threat to Russia, the United States, Iran, and France. This set of countries is not accidental, Komsomolskaya Pravda notes. Yerevan is actively trying to embroil Tehran with Ankara and attract the Iranians to its side, provoking them to active military intervention.
However, the stake looks exceptionally dubious. Despite the contradictions and regional rivalry between Turkey and Iran, both countries actively cooperate on several issues. It primarily concerns the security sector, KP recalls. In particular, Ankara and Tehran are equally concerned about Kurdish separatist movements, making the prospect of a joint military operation all the more likely. The parties have long decided to cooperate in intelligence fighting against terrorists: the sides signed the agreements in May 2018. A couple of years later — in June 2020 — the Iranian Armed Forces openly and actively supported Turkey in the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) within the framework of Operation Tiger Claw.
All these circumstances add even more paradox to the statements of the Armenian and NKR authorities, who insist that Turkey's actions are aimed precisely at supporting Kurdish separatism in Iran.
It is symptomatic that these statements come in parallel with reports of the transfer of Kurdish group members to Karabakh by Yerevan, the KP said. For example, there is already evidence that Armenia is supported by militants of the Syrian movement 'Nubar Ozanyan' from the people's self-defense units associated with the PKK, and fighters from Lebanon, who were part of the 'Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia' (ASALA ) before its dissolution. Some Armenian websites even posted the statement of one of the 'veterans' of the organization, telling about former fighters coming from the Middle East and Europe. And though they later removed it in an apparent awareness that it was incriminating evidence, the video is still available on the Internet. Moreover, it has long been known that PKK detachments traditionally operate in the Turkish provinces, bordering on Armenia.
After the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry that militants of illegal armed groups from Syria and Libya are transferred to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, the head of the department for resettlement affairs of the Kashatagh region Robert Matevosyan said that the second group of volunteers from the NKR's Kashatagh region went to the front line to support military personnel serving on the border.
As it became known on October 1 from social networks, the residents of Greece, both of Armenian and Greek descent, Thessaloniki, Crete, and Thessaly, left to 'strengthen the fighting spirit.' Simultaneously, through the organizations controlled by it, Armenia is actively working on Russian territory. According to KP, the leader of the Union of Armenians of Russia (SAR), Ara Abrahamyan said at the very beginning of the escalation that 'tens of thousands of Armenians — both citizens of Russia and non-citizens — are asking us to help in sending them to Nagorno-Karabakh <...>. We have already received appeals from twenty thousand such volunteers.'
According to Abrahamyan, Armenia and NKR do not need volunteers. Nevertheless, some representatives of the Armenian diaspora reportedly left Russia for Nagorno Karabakh.
Trying to play on the contradictions between the world actors, Armenia is spoiling its image by attracting external forces. It failed to prove Turkey's direct participation in the conflict over the NKR, and involvement of the Syrian opposition. All statements voiced by Yerevan or European critics remain unconfirmed. But 'experts from social networks' shout about these terrible mercenaries and put pressure on Russia, demanding to intervene, although 'they demanded that Russia NOT interfere in really problematic areas: Crimea-2014, South Ossetia-2008, Syria-2015.' Moscow, having vast experience in settling much bloodier conflicts in the Middle East, is acting competently, standing above the battle, and using the diplomatic methods, KP said.
