Despite the fact that three months have passed since the end of the Second Karabakh War, Azerbaijan's just struggle for the liberation of its lands is still under discussion in the international arena. Although some countries support Baku's rightful position and war, there are "democratic" countries that are biased against our country, as well as our closest ally, Turkey.
Examples of this are the anti-Azerbaijani, anti-Turkish propaganda carried out by Paris during the war, the call of the French Senate to recognise the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, the territory of Azerbaijan, in violation of international norms and laws. Even now, American senators, who used to teach the world a lesson in democracy, are following in the footsteps of their French counterparts. On February 10, 54 out of 100 members of the US Senate sent a letter to President Joseph R. Biden. The letter condemned Turkey's encouragement of Azerbaijan to use force in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The senators were asked to put pressure on Turkey for these steps. The American "democrats" said that Turkey's move was part of a larger geopolitical plan.
In his comment to Eurasia Diary, Umud Mirzayev, President of the International Eurasia Press Fund, said he regretted for the step taken by the US senator on making such an appeal. Back in the early 1990s, when our lands were occupied, the United States adopted the 907th Amendment. Thus, Azerbaijan was restricted from receiving support and humanitarian aid from any sources. Today's appeal to the President of the United States can be compared with the step of those who succeeded in adopting the 907th amendment.
The IEPF President noted that spotting Turkey's name serves for some political purposes.
"It arouses a question. Why Turkey? The occupied was our land, and Turkey provided some assistance. Of course, Azerbaijan paid for this assistance. Taking advantage of the existing opportunities, Azerbaijan bought weapons from Russia, Israel, Pakistan and other countries to liberate its lands from occupation. But only the name of Turkey is still pointed. Everyone in Azerbaijan was preparing for this war. Because the OSCE Minsk Group, of which the United States is a member, was a direct mediator not in resolving the conflict, but in prolonging it. They did not think about the return of more than a million IDPs. Therefore, I think that such steps by the United States create a sense of disappointment among peace-loving and pro-democracy Azerbaijanis. Because they do not defend justice, they do not protect the rights," Umud Mirzayev said.
The senators also noted in the letter that Turkey pursues its geopolitical goals in the South Caucasus and the Middle East. The IEPF President said that this approach was wrong, emphasising that peace had been established in the region due to Turkey's steps: “Why are they discussing Turkey's geopolitics and not their own? For many years, US geopolitics has served to prolong the occupation. We needed the liberation of our lands. If our interests coincide with the interests of Turkey, it is very nice. I think that US officials have no right to criticise Turkey here. Peace has already arrived in the Caucasus. Turkey's arrival brought peace. Communications with Armenia will be opened, borders will be removed, and intercommunication will be established. It would be more expedient if the senators who signed this document worked hard and corrected their policies.
Noting that if Turkey faces sanctions and pressure, it will not affect our relations, the IEPF President said, adding that he expects a clear decision from the administration of the new US President.
"I doubt that sanctions will be imposed on Turkey. The United States is a state that measures its steps and decisions. These issues must be reconciled with the realities. I do not think that the United States should act out of reality. As a civil society official, I note that any step taken against Turkey is also a step taken against Azerbaijan. Now it's not the early 90s. Especially in relation to Azerbaijan, "Umud Mirzayev said.
