On July 20, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Russia. The aim of his visit was met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During the official meeting, the two leaders discussed a number of issues related to bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, as well as the post-conflict situation in the region and the implementation of the provisions of trilateral statements of November 10 and January 11.

According to some experts, the discussions in the meeting between the two heads of state mainly focused on the opening of regional corridors.

They believe that after the meeting of the heads of two states, Russian and Azerbaijani side will accelerate the start of the works on the establishment of the Zangazur.

Generally, to what extent could Russia be interested in opening of the Zangazur corridor in the near future? Could this corridor serve in favor of Russia’s geopolitical and geo-economic interests? What reactions could be expected from Moscow in case of obstacles by Armenia for the opening of the Zangezur corridor?

Well-known political analyst Elkhan Shahinoglu told Eurasia Diary that the foundation of the Zangazur corridor could lead to the creation of a broad economic market among regional countries. Therefore, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia are interested in accomplishing this corridor.

"Not only leaders of Russia and Azerbaijan, but also Armenian Prime minister Nikol Pashinyan signed the November and January trilateral statements. Both documents mention the importance of the foundation of the regional corridors. Unfortunately, Armenia is delaying the implementation of the provisions of the statements. Yerevan said that they should not only work on the Zangezur corridor, but also other corridors.  However, in his recent speeches, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan supports the works on the opening of all regional corridors, "Shahinoglu said.

According to E.Shahinoglu, the main reason for Armenia's concern over Zangezur is the empowerment of Azerbaijan and Turkey in the region: “Armenia has fears that Turkey and Azerbaijan can further strengthen their political and economic power in the region through the Zangazur corridor. That is why Yerevan is delaying the issue. "

Analyst also said that the Zangazur corridor works in favor of the geostrategic interests of even Russia. Moscow fully supports the opening of this corridor.

"If Russia has included the clauses in the trilateral statements connected to the corridors, it means that Moscow is interested in the accomplishment of all regional corridors.  The corridors serve Russia's interests. However, we see one problem that Moscow has not been putting pressure on Armenia in this regard. We do not see serious statements from Moscow about the issue of the corridor. We know that Armenia is a state depending on Russia. In this regard, Armenia cannot resist Moscow's pressure. The main thing is for Russia to put pressure on Yerevan, "Shahinoglu said.

"Furthermore, the Russian leadership supports the six-party format proposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The establishment of broad economic cooperation in the region is beneficial for Russia. This regional cooperation can only be ensured by the opening of the Zangazur corridor. Without this corridor, it is impossible to strengthen the six-party format of regional cooperation. Through this corridor, Turkey can get access to the markets of Central Asia and Russia, and Russia can get access to the markets of Turkey, Armenia and Iran," he added.

In conclusion, Shahinoglu said that some chauvinist forces in Russia are trying to impede the foundation of the corridor: “Unfortunately, some chauvinist forces in Russia have a negative attitude to the opening of the regional corridors. They stand by Armenia in this regard. They believe that the creation of the corridors can lead to Turkish unity. However, the main goal of Azerbaijan and Turkey is to create these corridors. Our President has expressed his firm position on this issue.
