A member of the CDU Presidium, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the German Bundestag, Norbert Röttgen, proposed to provide Ukraine with defense weapons systems in connection with Russia's actions. The politician said this in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
"Since Russia is threatening war, it would be wrong to exclude the supply of weapons defense systems now," Röttgen said.
According to the newspaper, when Kyiv asked Berlin to provide used German corvettes, SPD Foreign Minister Heiko Maas opposed, while Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU), on the other hand, said that she was "open" to address this question.
Meanwhile, the candidate for the post of Federal Chancellor of Germany, Annalena Baerbock, considers it inappropriate to talk now about Ukraine's membership in NATO because of the conflict with Russia.
"The message to Moscow should be like this: sovereign states themselves decide the issue of their alliances. This also includes the prospect of Ukraine in the EU and NATO. But you cannot take the third step before the first, and, of course, not in a situation where there is a tough conflict with Russia. I think it makes sense to support Ukraine in demining, "said Baerbock.
