An interview with Pogos Ter-Nersesyan, an ethnic Armenian who immigrated to Karabakh from Syria and is currently working in the construction industry in Karabakh, has recently been published in the Armenian media. The interviewee himself emphasizes that he used to live with his family in Zangilan and was engaged in farming there until the II Karabakh War took place. During the 44-day war, he was moved to Askeran settlement of Khojaly region.
It is worth noting that in early 2010, it was stated that the separatists would provide individual support to each Syrian Armenian who moved to Karabakh. Armenian government agencies, the Ministry of Diaspora, and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), which is developing a special "Help Your Brother" program in Yerevan, were directly involved in promoting the resettlement of Syrian Armenians in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Armenians from Syria (many from the Syrian cities of Qamishli and Aleppo) settled mainly in the occupied regions of Zangilan, Gubadli, and Lachin. Another confirmation of the policy of illegal settlement is the implementation of the project "Re-settlement of the villages of Karabakh" by the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund.
The Azercosmos' 2019 report notes that the scale of construction and repair of residential buildings, houses and other related social infrastructure facilities in Karabakh, especially in Lachin, have increased and that the construction of social infrastructure is directly related to the promotion of settlements here. In addition, Syrian Armenians living in these areas have been provided with free and "proprietary" housing by the Armenian government.
The so-called government has also invested in agriculture in areas inhabited by Syrian Armenians.
In addition, according to the human rights organisation Syrians for Truth and Justice, hundreds of Syrian militants and Syrian Armenians, as well as Syrian Armenians living in Karabakh, have been involved in the fighting against Azerbaijan in 2020.
With its policy of illegal settlement in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, Armenia has in fact turned the Syrian Armenians into a victim of its dangerous policy. The policy of illegal immigration has virtually failed. Today, the Armenian government is illegally holding these Syrian Armenians in Karabakh and turning them into political victims. Obviously, official Baku is acquiring detailed archival information about the identity of the people living in the pre-war territories of Karabakh. Moreover, Baku will not accept any artificially settled Armenians as traditional residents of Karabakh.
