Wildfires are nothing new and we have been seeing the effects of it for many years now but the current wildfires happening in 2021 are different from those that have happened in the past. It does not seem different but the consequences have proven that climate change is irreversible as long as we stay like this.
Many experts say the wildfires of 2021 must serve as a wake-up call for the world and leaders to start staying loyal to their goals and prioritize the urgency of climate change. The intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) released a large report on climate change recently and it has been confirmed that the last 6 years have seen record breaking high temperatures and that sea levels rising will be irreversible and unavoidable. The IPCC released a large report on climate change because of the shocking amount of places which were affected by climate change like China, Greece, USA, Turkey, and Europe.
The wildfires are getting to a certain point where ancient sites in certain countries like Greece are being threatened and closed down. People can not leave their homes due to the ash rains caused from the wildfires. A firefighter from Greece said that the fire was so extreme that the water from the hose would evaporate before reaching it, this is something that is rarely seen and experienced.
The IPCC confirms that the world will experience catastrophic weather conditions even if humans manage to keep the temperature stable and decrease it , IPCC has also confirmed that even if the paris agreement decided to make more ambitious and demanding requirements for the countries to follow it would not make a change anyway and by 2030 the temperature is projected to hit beyond the target limit. After analysing the report experts have said that this proves how one species can heavily impact the world. It's been said that more extreme weather conditions are going to be seen in the future and that the 2021 IPCC climate change report is one last reality check before things get worse for humanity. Leaders of the world have agreed to organize a crucial climate summit in November.
Experts have heavily criticized country leaders and the Paris climate agreement because they fail to reach the goals that were agreed on. It is confirmed that heat waves that used to occur every 50 years will now happen every decade. Scientists had predicted that glacier caps would be melting at a slower rate but that got proven wrong when they started melting at a much faster rate than projected resulting in coastal flooding and sea levels rising.
In an interview with the Guardian, a professor of climate impacts at Exeter university stressed “We now need to live with the consequences of what we have already done to the climate. We are hopelessly unprepared to deal with increasingly severe extreme weather events, even though these have been predicted by science for decades.”
Experts hope that after seeing all that has happened with the heatwaves and floods people will realize how much of an issue climate change is and start to make a change even if it's small. It should also be an eye opener to those leaders that the extreme heatwaves and floods are “ code-red” for humanity.
