The occupation of Azerbaijan territory by Armenian armed forces is an evident violation of international law, said Mark Hauptmann, member of the parliament of the Federal Republic of German - Bundestag in his exclusive interview to Eurasia Diary.
Eurasia Diary: How can you assess diplomatic relations between Germany and Azerbaijan?
Mark Hauptmann: Last year Azerbaijan and Germany celebrated the 20 anniversary of their diplomatic relations. Germany then announced to further enhance the cooperation of the states. Azerbaijan is the most important partner in Transcaucasia region. The profound and trustful dialogue in a variety of matters is highlighted by multiple mutual visits of state representatives. Azerbaijan and Germany share close relationship ever since the first German settlers have arrived in Goygol, region of Azerbaijan in the early 19th century.
Eurasia Diary: What is your opinion about current state of and prospects for economic ties between the two countries?
Mark Hauptmann: Azerbaijan is Germany’s most important business partner in region. Investments are on the rise and common interests, especially in energy politics, guarantee continued enhancement of our economic ties.
Eurasia Diary: Armenian armed forces have been keeping 20 % of territory of Azerbaijan under occupation for 23 years. What is your opinion about Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan?
Mark Hauptmann: The occupation of Azerbaijan territory by Armenian armed forces is an evident violation of international law. Therefore, I strongly support the implementation of relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. The armed forces have to be withdrawn from the occupied regions with immediate effect so that the refuges can return their homes. Furthermore, the reinforcement of the armistice is crucial requirement for stable political solution of conflict. We need the Minsk Groups to operate and find diplomatic solution for the whole region. The lack of Armenian cooperation in the past does not mean that conflict continue forever. We need peaceful solution and need to protect rights of refugees to return their homes.
