Azerbaijan has already taken important steps for the assistance to refugees, for instance all the children can attend the school and all of them can enjoy healthcare services in polyclinics, said UNHCR Representative in Azerbaijan Furio De Angelis in his exclusive interview to Eurasia Diary.
He said the largest refugee groups in Azerbaijan are from Afghanistan, Chechen Republic and from Iran.
Furio De Angelis noted that refugees have to find safe place to go and they might have different logistics and reasons for making a choice, but certainly the fact that in Azerbaijan the borders are kept open, its possible to enter and leave, and it’s easy for refugees to apply for asylum.
UNHCR Representative added “what we ask from the government of Baku is to complete the legislation by introducing the complementary protection that will allow recognize as refugees also the persons who are fleeing from wars or generalised violence.”
“We want the government to elaborate and create a coherent and complete integration policy so that from the initial positive steps which have been taken a comprehensive policy of integration can be achieved”, stressed Furio De Angelis.
