It is reported that the European Union (EU) has stopped the integration process of Georgia. Both the US and the EU are reviewing relations with Georgia.
"In particular, the leaders of the EU member states decided to suspend the process of Georgia's accession to the EU."
This statement was made by EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski during the conference “EU Enlargement - A Geopolitical Necessity and the Next Steps for the EU Candidate States” in Tbilisi on July 9.
What do you Georgian experts think about such harsh Western measures?
Ednews presents:
Former Minister of Education and Science Gia Nodia:
"The statement of the EU ambassador that the EU is suspending the process of Georgia's succession to the EU is quite logical. And basically, effectively, the process was stopped by the Georgian side. Georgia made a strategic U-turn, effectively. It turned its back on the European Union, on the West in general. And while it would not admit this, this also means coming closer to the Russian world. So the EU reaction is just a reaction to this fact.
Obviously, you know, that if Georgia ignores Europe's opinion and considers the European Union as an entity run by a global war party, which is basically the enemy of Georgia, then of course the European Union would suspend the processes of European integration. It's absurd from the Georgian side to consider Europe its enemy and at the same time continue to say that we are committed to European integration."
Arnold Stepanyan, an expert on the South Caucasus region:
"I don't think this is the end yet. The measures from the West are some kind of a mirror strategy. You cannot talk about European aspirations and at the same time, then in practice, pursue policies that contradict European values. Georgia strives to become part of the European family, but in this family, there are rules that you either accept or not. Several fundamental rules were violated by the ruling elite, which led to a response from the West. The reaction of the European Union and the United States is expected; the latter has warned about this more than once. In fact, the choice is simple - either you go towards the European Union along the road that they show you and help you pass, or you choose another path. The government is trying to tell the European Union that it is striving for them, but along a different road and does not want to understand that there is no other road."
Political scientist Gia Khukhashvili:
This is a situation where there is no one to blame. If you declare that you want to join the EU, there are rules of the game that must be followed. If you think that compliance with these rules somehow infringes on you, you should simply refuse to join. When you say that you want to join, but with your own Bible, it is at least incomprehensible. So, the authorities need to clearly and definitely answer a simple question - whether they want to join the EU or not. These sanctions are a consequence of precisely this contradictory position when you both want and inject...
