Eurasia Diary held an exclusive interview with President of EANA and TT News agency Jonas Eriksson.
Eurasia Diary: First of all, can you please explain the targets of EANA?
Jonas Eriksson:One of the targets is try to get fruitful cooperation between all the European News agencies. The benchmark of what we do in terms of our businesses is that we can learn from each other mistakes and also the precision that we have taken from the media landscapes. The other target is to maintain unbiased news, protect the role of journalism in our society.
Eurasia Diary: In your opinion, what is the role of media in processes of conflicts resolving, in problems such as migration, discrimination, racism and so on?
Jonas Eriksson:Media has only one role and that is to report in an unbiased way what is going on and what is happening in the world. According to me, media doesn’t have a role that point out what should be done.
Eurasia Diary:We saw a great role of media in US election process. What did you observe during the elections and how you see the elections itself?
Jonas Eriksson:The US presidential elections were put in sort of a contest and all polling and betting institutes all over the world were certain that Ms Hillary Clinton will win the election. However, the other way turned out. I was thinking that it would be a landslide for Hillary. Also of note, exactly the same thing happened a few months earlier in England with the Brexit. Everyone was fairly certain that is going to be Bremain not Brexit. However, after the referendum night I woke up and realized that UK leaving the EU.
Once again, it is a tough role today because we have so many platforms of the media and all our words can be spread in some many diverse ways. Therefore, you have to be careful because our actions come through in the way we made it at first. The social media landscape is not always the case.
