A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Monday evening local time, prompting a tsunami warning for parts of the country’s north and northeast.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred around 0752 GMT, with its epicenter about 71 miles off Miyako in Iwate Prefecture. Japan’s authorities measured the tremor at magnitude 7.5.
Following the quake, the government issued tsunami warnings along the Pacific coast, including Aomori, Hokkaido and Iwate, urging residents to evacuate immediately.
“Those in coastal or river areas, evacuate right now to high ground and safer areas,” an official alert said.
There were no immediate reports of damage at the time of publication.
