French President Emmanuel Macron is on course to win the most seats in his country’s upcoming parliamentary election, according to an Ipsos/Sopra Steria poll published Tuesday.
The poll, commissioned by France Télévisions and Radio France, projects Macron’s République en Marche (REM) party will win 29.5 percent of the votes cast in the first round of the parliamentary election June 11. The conservative Les Républicains are projected to win 22 percent, 7.5 percentage points behind REM.
Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Front was third, projected to take 18 percent.
According to the poll, 45 percent of voters do not want Macron to have a majority in parliament, versus 28 percent who do. A further 27 percent said it was “preferable” Macron win a majority even if they didn’t support the new president.
The same poll indicated 58 percent of voters were satisfied with Macron’s performance since he took over the presidency this month. (politico)
