The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, received at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh on Monday US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

During the meeting, they reviewed historical relations between the two friendly countries and the latest developments in the Middle East, SPA said.

The US embassy in Riyadh said that the two leaders held a “fruitful” meeting that discussed several issues, including Yemen, Iran and Afghanistan.

Pompeo expressed his gratitude for Riyadh’s support for the UN political process in Yemen and peace process in Afghanistan.

The meeting was attended by Saudi Ambassador to Washington Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of State and Cabinet Member Dr. Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ibrahim bin Abdulaziz Al-Assaf, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, the agency said.

US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Satterfield, Chargé d'Affaires at the United States Embassy to the Kingdom Christopher Henzel, Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey and a number of officials also attended the talks.

Pompeo also visited Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.

During the meeting, they reviewed the aspects of strategic partnership between the two countries and the latest regional and international developments, SPA said.

They also tackled Yemen and the need to maintain the truce in Hodeidah in line with Sweden agreement that was reached in December, continued the embassy.

The comprehensive political solution is the only way to end the conflict in Yemen, it added.

Pompeo also met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir, who revealed that in addition to Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan and the Red Sea, talks focused on Iran’s malicious regional behavior.

The discussions covered joint efforts to counter Tehran’s expansionist policies that are harmful to regional and international security, he revealed.

“We stressed the need to continue regional efforts against Iran and bolster peace, prosperity and security,” Jubeir added.

Pompeo was in Riyadh as part of an eight-day tour of the Middle East that saw him visit Amman, Cairo, Manama, Baghdad, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat.

He canceled a stop in Kuwait after a death in the family and he is set to return to the US to attend the funeral.
