German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition government has extended by six months an embargo on weapons exports to Saudi Arabia which signed after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
“The ban will be extended for a further six months to September 30. Over this period no new export applications will be approved,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert told Reuters reported.
The government also called on France and Britain to ensure that any weapons systems delivered to Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates would not be deployed in the Yemen conflict.
During that period, no new contracts will be approved, Seibert said. The decision came after Merkel met with members of her cabinet to review the policy, Deutsche Welle reported.
