The UN Security Council on monday discussed the statement on condeming attack againist US Embassy in Baghdad that the United States and 27 countries spoke against attack on the Baghdad embassy, but two permanent members of the Security Council dismissed that statement.
Eurasia Diary reports citing Tass and Reuters, Russia and China considers that it did not take into account the subsequent US air strike near Baghdad, which resulted in the killing of Iranian top general Qasem Soleimani.
"I would like to inform you, first of all, as a principle, we condemn strongly any attacks on any embassies, in any states, and we strongly condemn the attack on the American embassy in Baghdad. However then, on 3 January, there was that strike on the airport in Baghdad. To ignore this and not to take this into account in the overall context would be impossible,” Russian Permanent Envoy to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya said reporters.
The UN Security Council has not yet discussed escalation of the conflict between Iran and the US and will hardly be able to work out a common statement regarding the killing of Qasem Soleimani, Nebenzya said, Tass informs.
It is noted in Reuters that China also indicated unanimity with Russia.
“If the council is supposed to do something, we should have complete coverage of the whole thing,” Chinese envoy, Zhang Jun said reporters,
The tension has been dramatically escalated in the Middle East since the killing of Iran General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad by the US air strike on 3 January. The Islamic Republic has vowed to take revenge on the US attack and started scaling down its obligations are connected with nuclear agreement.
