After the Armenian forces captured Shusha, the Turkish leadership was ready to launch a military operation in support of Azerbaijan.
According to Axar.az, Armenian political scientist Suren Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page that Turhish government during that period under internal pressure could strike Armenia in otder to protect Azerbiajan. However, the President of United States George Bush intervened in this case.
According to him, on May 10, that is, 2 days after the capture of Shusha, Bush called on Turkey to refrain from a military operation against Armenia. On the same day, an 11-minute telephone conversation took place between him and Turkish Prime Minister Suleiman Demirel, in which Washington exerted ultimatum pressure on Ankara.
“President Bush:“ I know about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, we received your message. We want a peace to be established. I understand that you are under internal pressure. I urge you to exercise restraint and refrain from military intervention. The situation is very complicated. ”
Suleiman Demirel: “I will ask our people to be patient. I will tell them that military intervention is impossible. That today we cannot solve the problem by force of arms. We will work with our Azerbaijani brothers. ”
President Bush: “President Ter-Petrosyan called me at the end of last week, and I said that we need a peaceful settlement,” the Armenian political scientist quotes fragments of the conversation.
