At the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit convened by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Belgian government, concerns over the operation of Armenia's Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant have taken center stage. High-ranking representatives from over 30 nations have gathered for this critical summit, where the precarious state of the Metsamor facility has sparked alarm among civil society groups.
Ednews reports that Umud Mirzayev, president of the International Eurasia Press Fund, said these words in his statement to AZERTAC.
He noted that the nearly 50-year-old Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is a source of great danger for Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Armenia and the entire region today. Unfortunately, this risk is increasing day by day and there is still no one taking serious measures to stop this process. It seems that we are heading towards the second Chernobyl event.
Despite repeated requests in this regard, Armenia still does not intend to stop the operation of this station, on the contrary, it directly commits a crime by discharging its liquid waste into the Araza, a transboundary river. "I think that the activity of the station is an international crime, an act of terrorism. It is a weapon of threat and intimidation not only for the neighboring countries, but also for the entire region.
In the speech of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, in the mentioned summit, he noted that together with the AEBA of Azerbaijan, research is being conducted on the application of nuclear technology in the field of combating the mine threat, which is one of the biggest problems of our country. This is a very unique and important initiative. But the main thing that bothers me is that both landmine and NPP threats are of similar severity and come from the same source. All this is not accidental and is the main part of Armenia's terrorist intention", U. Mirzayev emphasized.
