Israel's strikes on the Iranian consulate in Damascus led to the death of Mohammad Reza Zahidi, a high-ranking general of the IRGC. Iran said that Washington should make a statement about the attack.
How will this event affect the political situation in the region?
Speaking to Ednews about the issue, the chairman of the Middle East Research Center, political expert Sadreddin Soltan said that Zahidi was not the first high-ranking officer to be killed outside Iran:
"Four years ago, Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander General Qasem Soleimani was neutralized by the US military. After that, Tehran authorities said that the general's blood will not be left on the ground. I believe that the killing of General Mammad Reza Zahidi is an event that happened during the course of military operations. In other words, this is not an attempt to assassinate the general. Because he served in Damascus to fight against Israel and the US military.
If Israel or the US had not neutralized Zahidi, Zahidi would have behaved like this against the US and Israeli soldiers. Therefore, this can be considered as a part of the combat operation.
As for Iran taking large-scale military steps in the region, it does not seem very reasonable in the current situation. Iran has not encountered a similar event in the region. Neither Israel nor the USA is hiding in the consulate of any country. In this regard, Iran's statements in any form are not considered logical. Because Zahidi is not the first high-ranking officer of Iran to be neutralized outside the country's borders, these incidents have happened before. In addition, seven more Iranian soldiers lost their lives as a result of that attack."
