Today is the birthday of Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
According to Ednews, on this occasion, Umud Mirzayev, the president of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF), and the editorial staff of "Eurasia Diary" extend their congratulations to Muhammad Yunus on his 84th birthday. They wish him continued inspiration, high spirits, and robust health, thanking him for his invaluable contributions to the economic and social sectors.
Muhammad Yunus has made significant contributions to the development of social business by revolutionizing concepts around bank credit. Witnessing poverty firsthand in a Bangladeshi village in 1974, he began his work in poverty alleviation and designed programs for rural economies. He pioneered the concept of microcredit, advocating for giving small entrepreneurs and family businesses access to low-interest, collateral-free loans.
In 1983, he founded Grameen Bank ("Village Bank"), which provided credit to the low-income residents of Bangladesh. Through this initiative, he not only demonstrated the feasibility of creating social businesses based on helping people in developing countries but also in industrialized nations, including the United States.
In recognition of his efforts in the economic and social development sectors, Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
Professor Muhammad Yunus is an honorary doctor of 55 influential universities in 20 countries. He has received 112 awards from 26 countries, including state awards from 10 countries.
Muhammad Yunus is one of the few individuals who have been honored with the Nobel Prize, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal.
In 2016, Muhammad Yunus visited Azerbaijan at the invitation of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF). During his visit, he was received by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and other high-level government officials. Yunus participated in a lecture on "Social Business," attended by representatives of diplomatic missions, ministries, committees, and official personalities. The Azerbaijani translation of his book "Banker to the Poor" was presented during this visit.
It is noteworthy that Muhammad Yunus visited Baku most recently in March of this year. He met with members of the Patronage Board at the office of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF).
