Azerbaijan was one of those that declared their independence among the Soviet republics in the early 1990s. The Kremlin, in turn, tried to convince the world community that the multinational army sent Baku to protect only the Russians and save the Armenians. This kind of disinformation has also come to Lithuania through some channels. At that time, Azerbaijan was in the information block and it was difficult to spread the truth to the world.
The scenario of the events was prepared in the Kremlin in advance, and the empire leadership resorted to provocation between Armenians and Azerbaijanis to justify their actions. As you know, Kremlin's experience in this field is very rich. Certainly, the main purpose was to suppress the desire of the Azerbaijani people to gain independence and freedom and not to allow the collapse of the Soviet Union!
The news of these tragic events that took place on January 20 was acknowledged by the people of Lithuania as very painful and regrettable. As you know, Lithuania has a large community of Azerbaijanis. Thanks to Mahira Gamzayeva, chairman of the Azerbaijani community of the Odlar Yurdu, the terrific events have received extensive political assessment in Lithuania.
The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences firmly condemned this military aggression and the killing of innocent civilians. Therefore, Lithuania demanded the return of Lithuanian soldiers serving in Azerbaijan at that time. They demanded the withdrawal of the Soviet army from Azerbaijan.
As it is known, a year later, with the consent of Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet army carried out massacres in Vilnius.
Today, Azerbaijan is an independent state, and it is important for us to commemorate the memory of those who died for the sake of freedom and independence for the Lithuanians together with the Azerbaijanis!
As it is known, all these horrific operations were led by the Defense Minister of the USSR Dmitry Yazov. His orders were executed by Vladimir Kryuchkov, Vadim Bakatin and others. Most of the Soviet armies with more than 30,000 servicemen were armed with modern weapons, ranging from head to toe under the direction of General Alexander Lebedev. They used force against unarmed people who came to the demonstration using the 5.45 mm caliber bullets banned by various conventions around the world.
The Kremlin was defeated and lost its reputation once and for all! Thus, Azerbaijan has opened the way for independence and freedom to other republics, pulling itself the flame and anger of Soviet imperialism !!!
That is why January 20 is so important to Lithuania! We need to know our past that we do not make mistakes. Today, we respect the memory of the heroes who lost their lives in Lithuania in the name of our liberty and independence. One year after January 20, hundreds of Azerbaijanis came to defend Lithuania's independence. Common pain, history and memory unites us.
What happened on January 20, 1990, was an excuse for capturing Nagorno-Karabakh. I would sacrifice my life to break the information blockade and do something for the brave Azerbaijani people ...
