Azerbaijani Ombudsman Office reacts detentions of people who threw trash against police

The Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan has released a statement regarding the detention of citizens by police in the Yasamal district.

“On June 8, 2020, websites and social networks posted videos and photos of detention of individuals who breached the rules of strict quarantine regime in Baku’s Yasamal district.

All, regardless of their identity, must abide by the law, and any violation must be legally assessed, said the Ombudsman Office.

The Ombudsman taking control of the issue reviews the appeals of the detainees and their families and investigates any wrongdoing.

Hotline number 050-370-98-96 is available in case of any additional requests.

On June 6-8, the government imposed a weekend curfew in Baku, Sumgayit, Ganja, Lankaran cities and Absheron region, to slow down the spread of coronavirus.

Activities in all areas of service and the movement of transport (except for special-purpose cars, emergency vehicles, ambulances, and service automobiles of organizations authorized to operate) in four cities and the Absheron region, were halted from 00:00 on June 6 to 06:00 am on June 8.

Citizens were prohibited from leaving their places of residence on the date mentioned above, except the cases of imminent danger to their life and health and an urgent need for medical care, and participation in the funeral of close relatives.
