Today, the Novruz holiday is celebrated in Azerbaijan.
Novruz is an ancient national holiday symbolizing the incoming of spring, and it means “New day”.
Novruz holiday is celebrated on the equinox day when the astronomic spring starts in the Northern hemisphere (on March 20, 21, or 22). A number of peoples associated the incoming of the spring season with the quickening of nature, and held festivals on this occasion and celebrated it as the beginning of the new year.
Beginning from ancient times, along with Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and some other oriental peoples, the Azerbaijani Turks also welcomed in with festivities the incoming of spring – a new year.
On September 30, 2009, Novruz was included in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, and on February 23, 2010, the UN announced March 21 as the “International Novruz Day”.
This holiday is celebrated with great solemnity in Azerbaijan as well.
Note that this year, the spring season will be in Azerbaijan on March 20 approximately at 13:37:00 Baku time.
In connection with Novruz holiday 9 consecutive days (March 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28) will be non-working days.
