Muirfield golf club has invited 12 women to become members for the first time in 275 years, putting an end to their controversial tradition.
Muirfield is the world's oldest golf club and has been embroiled in a long-standing sexism row that saw it kicked off the rota to host golf's oldest major after failing to change it's stance on men-only members in 2016.
Members originally voted to disallow women from joining but the controversial decision was overturned just a year later.
Individuals who are invited to become members at the club must go through a vetting process by existing members to decide who makes the cut.
Alistair Campbell, captain of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, said: 'It is my great pleasure to announce that 12 women have been formally invited to join the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers this month.
'This marks a milestone in the club's illustrious history, and we look forward to welcoming all of our new members to share in the great values and traditions of our club.'
According to the Edinburgh Evening News, the 12 women have now made the final stage of the approval process.
