On 21 November the Consultations of the Global Compact Document for the Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was held.
The International Organization of Migration is supporting the State Migration Service and the Government of Azerbaijan in the preparation of Azerbaijan's Migration Strategy for 2019-2024. The Strategy document aims to comply with the principles set out at the global level in the field of migration, as well as the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Global Compact Paper for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which is expected to be adopted in December of the current year.
In this regard, IOM and the State Migration Service held discussions for the implementation of this document on November 21, 2018, with the participation of the embassies of state bodies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, as well as organizing seminars with the participation of academia representatives.
UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai made a speech during the consultations.
Firstly, Mr. Isaczai gave a brief explanation about the document: "The Global Compact is very consisted with the sustainable development goal. There is a specific target 10.7 in the agenda that deals with the issues of migration and calls the member states to cooperate and facilitate the safe order of the migration".
"Migration can directly contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goal and it will bring benefits to migrants and societies," Mr. Isaczai emphasized the importance of the Global Compact.
He also stated development of migration policy in Azerbaijan. "We highly appreciate Azerbaijan’s role in the drafting and development of the Global Compact. Azerbaijan has unique potential, which many countries have not and Azerbaijan has qualified professionals for this issue." Isaczai told.
The Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding was held on November 21, 2018, from 10:00 to 17:00 at the Hyatt Regency Conference & Meeting Center's Guba Hall by the financial support of the European Union.
