A Myanmar court has issued an arrest warrant on a provocation charge against nationalist Buddhist monk, Wirathu , police said Wednesday.
Wirathu is known for his rhetoric against minority Muslims, especially the Rohingya community, but he also criticized Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government and supported the mighty military of Myanmar.
Police representative Myo Thu Soe said the arrest warrant had been issued on Tuesday by the western region court in Myanmar's main city, Yangon.
He didn't give an explanation for the warrant.
The police representative told that police office in the central city of Mandalay has not received the warrant yet, where Wirathu lives.
Wirathu became an important figure in anti-muslim movement especially againt Rohingya minority in Myanmar and gained a political support since Myanmar's transition from military rule in 2011
In late meetings, Wirathu has blamed the government on corruption and criticized it for attempting to change the constitution in a manner that would diminish the power of the military.
“This sedition accusation is bullying him,” Thu Saitta, an ally of Wirathu told.
“We won’t say what we will do if he is arrested, but it is certain that we won’t be calm.”
