Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al-Said passed away Friday, Oman News Agency informed.
"This morning, an obituary will issue the following text: O reassured, reassured soul. Return to your Lord satisfied, satisfying and enter me into my servants and bring me to my country, to my mother," read the Oman News Agency's Twitter post early Saturday morning, confirming the 79-year-old sultan's death.
Qaboos came to power in 1970 following the ouster of his father by bloodless coup. Sultan Qabos had been longest-serving leader in Arab world and the Middle East. Under his rule, Oman did not join other Gulf countries against Iran, in contrary he made his country strongest ally of Iran in the region.
According to Sputnik, Qaboos had been sick for past several years and took treatment in foreign countries.
Furthermore, Qaboos had no child who could be successor to Sultanate. Council of Oman will determine new Sultan soon.
