Incoming British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the United Kingdom and the European Union "have much in common, not least the challenges we are facing with the economy and climate change, Tele Trader reports.
"His comments follow a call with European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen, who hoped the two sides can reach "joint solutions" to outstanding Brexit issues.
"The UK and EU will work together as friends and allies to tackle the challenges ahead. I look forward to meeting in person soon," Sunak wrote. It is currently unclear whether his position on Brexit and the Northern Ireland Protocol will differ from that of his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, whose relations with the EU were marked with tensions and disagreements.
