Italy has formally withdrawn from China's Belt and Road initiative, AFP reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed source from the south European country's government. The official who spoke to the media outlet pointed out that communication between the two countries would remain open.
Separately, Corriere della Sera reported that Beijing was notified of Rome's move three days ago.
The 24th European Union-China summit in Beijing is set to begin tomorrow.
