The Government of Maldives has clarified that the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 will not be engaged in research activities within Maldivian waters. Instead, the vessel is scheduled to arrive for a port call, according to official statements. Ednews reports the following citing External Affairs.
The impending arrival of the Chinese vessel has garnered attention, particularly in India, following Sri Lanka's announcement of a one-year moratorium on foreign research vessels accessing its ports. This decision came after India expressed concerns over the visits of a Chinese vessel to Sri Lankan ports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed on Tuesday that the Government of China had diplomatically requested necessary clearances from the Maldivian government for a port call, citing the need for personnel rotation and replenishment. In a statement shared on the social media platform X by Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, the Ministry emphasized that the vessel would not be conducting any research activities during its time in Maldivian waters.
The Ministry highlighted that the Maldives has consistently been a welcoming destination for vessels from friendly countries, both civilian and military, making port calls for peaceful purposes. It emphasized that such port calls enhance bilateral ties and reflect the longstanding tradition of the Maldivian people in welcoming vessels from friendly nations. The authorities pledged to uphold international best practices and relevant international maritime laws. While Indian authorities acknowledged the development, they refrained from providing specific comments.
