Germany is the second G7 country to commit to long-term aid for Ukraine . Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz ( SPD ) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky signed a corresponding bilateral agreement in Berlin, Ednews reports citing Spiegel.
According to a German government spokesman, it is an "agreement on security commitments and long-term support" for Ukraine, which has been defending itself against the Russian military offensive for almost two years. Details of the agreement were not initially known.
The agreement is intended to bridge the time until Ukraine becomes a member of NATO. There is currently no sign of joining the military alliance for the country attacked by Russia.
Zelenskyj had arrived in Germany in the morning for a visit ; after the meeting in the Chancellery with Scholz, he was to be received by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The Ukrainian president then travels to Paris. According to the Élysée Palace, he will also sign a bilateral security agreement there with French head of state Emmanuel Macron in the evening.
