Poland’s border guard asked the government on Monday that 1,000 more troops be sent to the border with Belarus. It said 350 people tried to cross illegally from Belarus to Poland over the weekend, including migrants from Afghanistan, Syria, India, Pakistan, Iran, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Algeria, Yemen, Bangladesh and Morocco, bringing the total this year to over 19,000.
Poland and other European Union members have accused Belarus in the past of transporting migrants to its EU borders in a "hybrid attack." Earlier this month, Poland said that Belarusian helicopters violated its airspace and that it arrested a Belarusian national suspected of spying for Russia. The Polish Defense Ministry has sent over 1,000 troops to the border already in recent weeks.
