Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that Russia might annex Georgian breakaway regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia should the Western parties continue to aggravate the situation in Georgia, Ednews informs.
In an opinion piece written for Argumenty i Fakty newspaper, Medvedev underlined that Moscow doesn't want a repeat of 2008. "We remain ready to solve problems at the negotiating table in the spirit of the UN Charter. But if our concerns become real, we will not hesitate," he stressed.
Medvedev claimed that Russia was the one to stop the attack on Tbilisi back in 2008. "But now the situation is being actively aggravated again in order to create another hotbed of tensions near our borders in addition to the Ukrainian flank. Again, there are talks about the possible admission of Georgia to NATO," he stated.
