"We have had very successful negotiations with Azerbaijan regarding the start of gas transportation from Azerbaijan to Hungary, and we have signed an agreement, but due to infrastructure problems in South-Eastern Europe, this cannot be realized," Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijártó said in his speech during the PACE summer session, Ednews reports.
He stated that Hungary lacks natural resources such as natural gas and oil and is hence reliant on imports.
"Everyone should understand that energy supply is not a political issue, and it has nothing to do with political choices. This is a matter of physical reality. We depend on the infrastructure as long as gas is transported through pipes. Although we discussed this issue with the European Union and asked them for financial assistance to enhance infrastructure, our demands remained unanswered," the Minister said.
He stated that he hopes to work with Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Türkiye, and other neighboring countries to settle existing infrastructure issues and bring Azerbaijani gas to Hungary soon.
