Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Azerbaijan can be considered a historic visit for many reasons. First of all, despite the explosion at the Shahid Rajai port in Bandar Abbas, the fact that the visit was not postponed showed that Tehran is interested in holding a high-level dialogue with Baku as soon as possible. The statements made by the heads of state and the signed documents give grounds to say that a new stage has already begun in bilateral relations.
These thoughts were expressed by Member of Parliament Konul Nurullayeva in her statement to EDnews.
According to thearticle, despite some previous disagreements, close neighborliness, common history and cultural heritage have always played an important role in Iranian-Azerbaijani relations. During this visit, Baku and Tehran announced their intentions to successfully continue relations against the backdrop of the geopolitical and economic realities currently observed in the world.
"In fact, Azerbaijan has always been interested in developing relations with all its neighbors, including Iran, and this policy continues today. It was no coincidence that Iran was also involved in the 3+3 format, which was created on the initiative of Azerbaijan after the 44-day war. At the same time, there are also trilateral cooperation formats of Azerbaijan-Iran-Turkey, Azerbaijan-Russia-Iran, and their initiator is President Ilham Aliyev. As is known, trilateral summits of the presidents of Azerbaijan, Iran, and Russia were held in Baku in 2016 and Tehran in 2017. One of the main issues discussed by the presidents during this visit was the development of cooperation in the field of transport," K. Nurullayeva noted.
Emphasizing the close cooperation between the two countries on the North-South transport corridor, the deputy said: "As the head of state said, this is not just a transport corridor, but also sufficient opportunities for opening new businesses and establishing new industrial enterprises along the road in the territories of Azerbaijan and Iran."
According to her, as for the Araz corridor connecting the Black Sea and the Gulf, this is also a project connecting the main part of Azerbaijan through the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the territory of Iran. The Astara-Astara and Astara-Rasht railway projects will strengthen trade relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan’s modernization of its railway infrastructure also has a positive impact on the development of relations between the countries of the region. Thus, Pezeshkian’s visit to Baku opened a new page in bilateral relations. Intervention by third countries against the strengthening of Azerbaijani-Iranian relations is unacceptable. Baku and Tehran will jointly prevent these attempts,” Konul Nurullayeva noted.
