Iran remains one of the main pillars of Russia in its war against Ukraine. And the military partnership between the two countries is only getting stronger.
This was stated by Deputy Press Secretary of the US State Department Vedant Patel on Tuesday, 25 July, during a briefing in Washington.
Patel was asked to comment on US intelligence information that Iran is helping Russia build a drone manufacturing plant.
"Iran remains Russia's main military backbone," the State Department official said in response.
He recalled the military assistance Iran had already provided to Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"Russia has received hundreds of disposable strike UAVs from Iran, as well as equipment for the production of drones," Vedant Patel stated.
Historian and political analyst, author of books on Britain, Turkiye, and the South Caucasus, Dr. Patrick Walsh told to the Ednews that there certainly is a growing alliance between Russia and Iran:
“In the early stages of the war in Ukraine, Moscow underestimated the usefulness of drone warfare. The Russians have always had great faith in artillery as the God of War. However, it was discovered drones were very effective for all kinds of purposes.”
According to him, the Iranians whose drones have been used to much effect in Yemen provided the Russians with cheap drones that decoy against expensive US air defenses:
“There is some talk that the Iranians are building a drone factory now in Russia. The US/Iranian relationship originally came out of common interests in Syria, where both assisted President Assad to maintain power in the face of Western efforts to overthrow him.”
